Upwork Fee Calculator

The fee is not one number. It is set per contract and shown to you before you accept, so the useful calculation is on your actual rate.

Enter your numbers above.

The fee is per contract, not per account

Upwork's freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15%. It is set when a contract begins and does not change for the life of that contract. Two contracts running at the same time can carry different rates.

You see the percentage before you accept an offer or submit a proposal, so there is no reason to guess. Use the rate on your actual contract in this calculator rather than the 10% figure most articles still quote.

Working backwards from a target

Freelancers usually think in take-home terms: "I need $2,000 from this project". At a 10% fee, charging $2,000 leaves $1,800. To net $2,000 you need to charge $2,222.

The formula is target divided by one minus the fee rate. The calculator does this in the optional field, which is the number to put in a proposal rather than the number you want to keep.

Other costs that are not the service fee

Connects cost money and are consumed when you submit proposals, so unsuccessful proposals carry a real cost that never appears on a contract. Withdrawal fees and currency conversion also reduce what reaches your bank.

None of that is the service fee, but all of it comes out of the same revenue. A 10% fee plus 2% in withdrawal and conversion costs is a 12% haircut before tax.

Why the rate varies

Upwork sets the rate per contract based on the type of work and the marketplace conditions for that category. Because it is fixed once the contract starts, the only decision you control is whether to accept at that rate.

That makes the calculator a negotiation tool: run the numbers at the quoted rate, decide the minimum acceptable take-home, and use the reverse calculation when you counter.

FAQ

Is the fee always 10%?
No. It ranges from 0% to 15% and is set per contract. Check the rate shown on your specific contract.
Can the fee change mid-contract?
No. Once the contract begins the rate is locked for that contract.
Is the fee charged on tips or bonuses?
Bonuses are generally treated as part of the contract and the same service fee applies.
Do clients pay a fee too?
Clients pay a separate marketplace fee. The freelancer service fee is only your side.
