What the numbers mean

Commission is the platform's own cut of the sale. Payment is card processing, which some platforms bundle into the commission and others charge separately. Combined is the two added together, before any fixed per-order fee, listing fee, ad rate or fulfilment cost.

The combined column is a starting point, not an answer. A $5 sale and a $500 sale on the same platform can carry effective rates five points apart because of the fixed component.

Platform notes

Etsy

Transaction fee applies to shipping charged. Payment processing applies to the tax-inclusive total. Offsite ads are mandatory above $10k annual sales.

eBay

Final value fee applies to the total including shipping. Rate drops to 2.35% on the portion of a sale above $7,500. Store subscriptions reduce the rate.

Amazon FBA

Referral fee varies 8-45% by category, 15% typical, $0.30 minimum. Fulfillment fee is separate and based on size and weight.

Shopify

Basic plan $39/month. Third-party gateways add a 2% fee on Basic. Apps and theme costs are not included in the transaction rate.

Poshmark

Flat $2.95 commission on sales under $15. Buyer pays a flat shipping label, which is not part of the fee base.

Mercari

Payment processing is charged on the item price plus shipping and tax. No listing fee.

Depop

No Depop selling fee for sellers in the US, UK or Australia. Payment processing 3.3% + $0.45 via Depop Payments. Optional boosting fee is 12% for UK/US listings created from 23 March 2026. Outside those markets a 10% selling fee applies.

TikTok Shop

Creator affiliate commissions of 10-20% are the normal acquisition cost and are not included in the platform rate.

Walmart Marketplace

No monthly or per-order fee. Category rates typically 6-15%. WFS fulfillment is a separate per-unit charge.

What you actually keep

Net payout after the commission, payment processing and listing fee in the table above. It excludes product cost, shipping, advertising and fulfilment — so the Amazon and Walmart figures do not include an FBA or WFS fee, and the TikTok figure does not include a creator affiliate commission. Read across a row to see how the same sale price lands on each platform.

Two things the table makes obvious. First, at $10 the fixed fees dominate: the gap between the best and worst platform is proportionally far larger than at $100. Second, the ordering changes with price on platforms that carry a fixed component, so a platform that wins at $100 may lose at $10.

Common questions

Which marketplace has the lowest fees?

On the headline percentage, TikTok Shop at roughly 6% plus processing, followed by Etsy at 9.5% combined. The headline rate is misleading on TikTok because creator affiliate commissions of 10-20% are the normal acquisition cost, which pushes the real cost above Etsy's.

Do these rates include shipping?

It depends on the platform. Etsy, eBay and Depop charge their percentage on shipping charged to the buyer. Poshmark charges the buyer a flat label and excludes it from the fee base. Mercari charges processing on shipping and tax as well as the item price.

Why do the calculators show a different number than this table?

The table shows the base rates. The calculators add per-order fixed fees, listing fees, ad rates and fulfilment costs, all of which depend on the specific sale you are modelling.

Put a real sale through: the marketplace comparison runs one price across every platform at once.

These are the rates you are competing against

A storefront replaces the commission with a payment fee. On a $50 sale that difference is usually more than $4.
