TikTok Shop vs Amazon FBA: Fee Reality Check
Guide · 2026-10-17
On paper TikTok Shop's 6% commission looks like a gift next to Amazon's 15% referral fee. That comparison ignores fulfilment, which is where Amazon's cost actually lives.
Side by side on a $30 item
| Cost | TikTok Shop | Amazon FBA |
|---|---|---|
| Commission / referral | 6% = $1.80 | 15% = $4.50 |
| Payment processing | ~2% + $0.30 = $0.90 | Included in referral |
| Fulfilment | Seller ships (~$4.50) | FBA fee (~$5.00) |
| Total platform cost | $2.70 | $9.50 |
| Net before product cost | $27.30 | $20.50 |
TikTok Shop leaves $6.80 more per unit. That is the entire argument, and it is real.
What the table hides
Traffic. Amazon has built-in purchase intent. TikTok Shop requires you to create content that converts, or to pay creators 10-20% affiliate commission on top. Add a 15% affiliate commission to the TikTok row and the platform cost rises to $7.20, narrowing the gap to $2.30.
Returns. TikTok's impulse-driven audience returns more. A 10% return rate on TikTok versus 5% on Amazon costs you an extra unit of margin per ten sales.
Storage and aged inventory. Amazon's monthly storage and aged-inventory surcharges are real costs that do not appear in a per-unit fee table.
When TikTok Shop wins
- You can produce short-form video consistently. The organic reach is the cheapest acquisition available.
- Your product demonstrates well on camera (beauty, gadgets, apparel).
- You are launching a new brand with no reviews. Amazon's review moat is brutal for new listings.
When Amazon wins
- Buyers search for the product category rather than discovering it. Intent-based traffic converts at a fraction of the cost.
- You sell a commodity where Prime shipping is the deciding factor.
- You cannot sustain content production. Amazon does not require it.
The honest summary
TikTok Shop has lower fees and higher content cost. Amazon has higher fees and lower content cost. The correct comparison is total cost of acquisition, not the commission percentage. Sellers who compare only the percentage usually pick wrong.
