Walmart Marketplace Fees Explained
Guide · 2026-10-17
Walmart Marketplace charges no monthly fee and referral rates typically run 6-15%. On paper it looks like a cheaper Amazon. In practice the constraint is not the fee, it is the traffic.
The referral fee
A percentage of the item price, varying by category. Most categories sit at 15%, with consumer electronics lower and some specialty categories higher. Unlike Amazon, there is no professional selling plan and no per-order fee.
Fulfillment options
| Option | Cost | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Ship yourself (3PL or in-house) | Your actual postage | Full |
| Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) | Per-unit fulfillment + storage | Limited |
WFS gives you the two-day badge, which materially affects conversion. The trade-off is the same as FBA: storage fees, inbound requirements and less control over packaging.
A worked example
$34.99 item, 15% referral, $5.50 fulfillment, $11 product cost:
- Revenue: $34.99
- Referral: $5.25
- Fulfillment: $5.50
- Product cost: $11.00
- Net: $13.24 (37.8%)
The real constraint
Walmart's marketplace traffic is a fraction of Amazon's. A seller who moves from Amazon to Walmart because the fees are lower often finds that revenue falls by more than the fee saving. Lower fees on zero sales is still zero.
The realistic use case is as a second channel once you already have a product that sells, not as a replacement for Amazon.
Onboarding requirements
Walmart requires a US business entity, a tax ID, and a track record of marketplace or ecommerce sales. Approval is not automatic, and rejected applications are common for new sellers without history.
Where Walmart genuinely wins
- No monthly fee. For a low-volume seller, this beats Amazon's $39.99 plan.
- Less competition per listing in many categories, which means better organic visibility for the same product.
- Grocery and household categories where Walmart's customer base is strongest.
